My last post saw me making a pledge to complete a number of hobby related tasks in 2011. As it stands I'm 1/3rd of the way through the Trinity War campaign (although Sircyn is set to take the title already I think). I made some headway with the Night Goblins but the sheer volume of the scratch building and couple of hundred goblin models requiring paint on them helped to defeat my motivation somewhat. This doesn't mean I've given up on them but I've just changed the order of completing the armies.
This brings me to the Tomb Kings which had a wonderful new hardback book hit the shelves about a month ago. Enthused with some motivation by this I decided to start some work on them and construct a 3000 point army list. I have scratch built a Hierotitan for this which I am pretty pleased with and in addition I have a unit of Necropolis Knights well on their way to completion.

I'm pretty pleased with the Hierotitan as I only really had the fluff in the book to base it on as there is no Games Workshop model. It is equally satisfying however as it is built from nothing more than sprue, plasticard, cocktail sticks and bitz and bobs from my modelling box. I've laid out a series of shots below for those interested in seeing how this model evolved.
I'm always hesitant to show the non-painted version of scratch built miniatures as they look terrible in comparison to the finished article. Once however I get paint on them I'm pleased that my scratch builds could be (and have been by some people) confused with plastic kits you can buy in the shops. I think my skills still have a long way to go but I'm pretty pleased with how accessible this makes my hobby at the moment. I was able to resurrect my Tomb Kings (no pun intended) merely out of models I already own and the rest has been left to scratch building. In terms of my wallet this has been a blessing!
I have another game with the Tomb Kings tomorrow so I will post again once that is done as this will have meant I have four games under my belt with the new book. In the mean time here is a quick teaser of how my Necropolis Knights started life on the modelling table.
